The NGV in Melbourne currently has a show of Jean Paul Gaultier’s fashion stuff. Which must be great, if you like fashion and textiles. I’m not a huge fan. But, as I was passing, I thought that I would pop in, ignore the crowds and go and see the somewhat lower key exhibition of photographer Alex Prager.
Prager is a self-taught photographer (and filmmaker), which raises her in my estimation straight away. Her large, staged and vividly colourful photographs, containing people often wearing wigs and retro fashion, feature filmic references within hyperreal scenes. An interesting, if small-scale, show.
A good start to the new year.
