High contrast black and white image of a walkwayIt’s interesting how mobile phone photography has become increasingly popular, even amongst artists. I often read that street photographers, especially, using iPhones for their projects.

I also often read articles citing the quality of images from smartphones. There are also many “iPhone versus …whatever” style comparison articles. But I’m still not convinced, as I find that the image quality, at least from my mobile, to be quite lacking.

I’m not a pixel peeper (someone who examines digital photographs ‘microscopically’, to look for flaws). I wouldn’t shoot film cameras if I was. But I find the lack of sharpness, artefacts and blown highlights to be an issue. Especially for printing at larger sizes.

However, for certain kinds of photography – and with the right post-processing – some fairly decent images can be achieved. High contrast black and white seems to work quite well for me. And, of course, it does save lugging around yet another piece of technology.
