{"id":423,"date":"2014-01-11T09:45:19","date_gmt":"2014-01-11T09:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crunchyspaces.com\/content\/?p=423"},"modified":"2014-01-22T02:47:42","modified_gmt":"2014-01-22T02:47:42","slug":"the-flowery-language-of-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crunchyspaces.com\/content\/the-flowery-language-of-art\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8216;flowery&#8217; language of art?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s hardly a new discussion, but it seems that the language used on descriptions alongside works of gallery art is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/10563500\/Stop-using-flowery-language-to-describe-works-of-art-Arts-Council-chief-tells-experts.html\">in the news<\/a> again.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The blame, it seems, is the fault of &#8216;experts&#8217; such as curators and critics.\u00a0 Perhaps rightly so \u2013 although, a\u00a0 graduate show I attended recently had some spectacularly amusing examples of this. But, I sometimes wonder to what degree these media-driven debates are simply attempts at dumbing down, or appeals to populism.<\/p>\n<p>How about other specialisms? Should we make plumbing less complex to understand? How about quantum physics, or horticulture?<\/p>\n<p>This also has echos of other debates around the accessibility or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchyspaces.com\/content\/mass-democratisation-death-of-photography-or-something-else\/\">democratisation<\/a> of art, design, photography and the creative arts in general.<\/p>\n<p>Elitism is vomit inducing \u2013 and there&#8217;s plenty of that in the art world. But, should there really be professionals out there &#8216;explaining&#8217; art to people?
