There have been many ‘death of photography<\/em>‘ type articles of late. Most attributing this to the rise of camera phones \u2013 in particular the iPhone.<\/p>\n

The images from this Guardian article<\/a> are particularly interesting, in their almost situationist style rendering of ‘the society of the spectacle<\/a>‘.<\/p>\n

Now, I probably never really fully understood everything about those theories but I suspect that what we have now is probably a step beyond that. People are not merely consuming visual manifestations of ‘the spectacle’ anymore. We have now become, not only active participants, but also creative producers of the spectacular. And even world leaders<\/a> are at it.<\/p>\n

From the ‘selfie<\/em>‘ to the ‘mass democratisation<\/em>‘ of photography, camera phones (and the language used to discuss photographic reproduction) appear to have changed the way in which the captured image is created, consumed and interacted with.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
